Connolly awaits cup draw

Former Dundalk player Dylan Connolly will be keeping a close watch on tomorrow's fifth round FA Cup draw - and no doubt hoping to get a crack at another Premier League side.

Connolly, who is from Johnstown, just outside Navan, played his part as his new club AFC Wimbledon achieved one of the biggest shocks of the FA fourth round when they defeated Premier giants West Ham Utd 4-2 at the Cherry Red Records stadium last night.

Connolly who only recently signed for AFC Wimbledon from Dundalk made his first start for the London club and produced an excellent performance with the jet-heeled winger giving opponent Arthur Masuaki a torried time.

Recently AFC Wimbledon appointed Wally Downes as their new manager but they remain bottom of League One seven points adrift of safety with only six wins from 29 games played in the league so far this season.

Yet Connolly and his colleagues put their league worries aside to achieve an astonishing victory over the multi-million pound West Ham side managed by one of the biggest names in world football, Manuel Pellegrini.

AFC Wimbledon scored first with a Kwesi Appiah shot that was deflected off Angelo Ogbonna. Scott Wagstaff added two more before Toby Sibbick headed home a fourth just before the end.

Connolly has had a chequered career. He had a spell with Ipswich Town after soon from Shelbourne. He returned home played for Bray Wanderers before Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny added him to his Oriel Park squad.

Watford, Manchester City, Derby County, Millwall, Swansea and Bristol City are just some of the clubs that will be in the pot for the next round.
