Navan coach Alan Kingsley

Navan seek to take giant step in Ulster

In what is one of the biggest games in the club's history Navan take on Rainey Old Boys in the AIL Div 2B promotion final at Magherafelt, Derry on Saturday.

Alan Kingsley and his team will travel north hopeful of repeating the kind of victory they achieved last Saturday when they made the journey down to Greystones and came away with a 22-16 victory.

Furhter hope for Navan can be taken from the way they defeated Rainey Old Boys 15-6 in Magherafelt in early April. That day Navan's place-kicker Brian Haugh couldn't miss as he bagged all his team's points from penalties to secure a win that copperfastened the Meath team's place in the play-offs.

However, Navan will have to be wary too as last Septemer the Ulster side travelled to Balreask Old and chalked up a 20-13 victory, surprising the home side.

Those results suggests Saturday's showdown will go down to the wire. The Navan pack has being playing well this year, dominating most opponents, but they will need to have a good day again if they are to get the better of their Rainey OB counterparts.

Bryan McKeever, Riaan van der Vyver, Leigh Jackson, Conor Ryan are the kind of experienced big-match players who can make the hard yards against the Ulster side and provide the momentum for victory. Another significant element of the Navan armoury is the rolling-maul from their own line-out.

A sizeable contingent of Navan supporters are sure to make the trip north for a game that could see Navan secure successive promotions.
