An 18 year old man was arrested in the early hours of this morning following the theft of a car from Navan.

The incident unfolded shortly after 2am when keys for a Vauxhall Insignia car were fished out through the letterbox of a house at Canterbrook, Navan. Gardaí on patrol observed the vehicle leaving the estate and signalled the car the stop. The driver failed to stop and drove off at high speed. At 2.40am the vehicle was intercepted in Ballymun by members of the Special Detective Unit. The driver was arrested at the scene and taken to Ballymun Garda Station. He is expected to appear in court later in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile,

Gardaí at Trim are investigating a house burglary which occurred last evening at The Belfry, Athboy Road. Around 9.30pm the house was entered by forcing the rear patio door and a number of rooms were ransacked. It appears that the intruders were disturbed when the keyholder arrived. They left the scene in a dark hatchback style car.

Anybody who was in the area last evening and who may have noticed any unusual or suspicious activity is asked to contact Trim Garda Station telephone 046-9481547.
