Maguire takes silver in World Games

Na Fianna athlete, Ciara Maguire, representing Ireland in the hammer throw at the World Sports Games in Riga, Latvia, took the silver medal with a massive throw of 48.73m.

Her efforts were enough to see off stiff competion from opponents from Finland, Iran and France. The competition was won by Christina Scheffauer of Germany.

'Ciara’s selection came on the back of her 2016 success which saw her take both the Leinster Schools and u-19 National titles. Due to Leaving Cert commitments, Ciara had to delay her departure until her final exam was completed,' explained Francis Hanily who is involved with the hammer throwing group based at Fr Murphy AC.

'Making a late dash for the airport, Ciara joined her fellow team mates in Riga a day later than the team departure and a day before her competition commenced on 13 June.'

The World Sports Games (WSG) are an international major event held every two years. The games are multi sports games for amateur athletes from different countries and cultures all over the world.
