Clrl Sean Drew on the N51 where 'boy racers' have been regularly spotted 'spinning doughnuts'

Drivers steering clear of 'boy racers' on the N51

Residents in the Rathmore and Athboy area are terrified of ‘boy racers’ spinning ‘doughnuts’ on the N51 a local councillor has said.

The stretch of road between Athboy and Rathmore is a regular meeting spot for thrill-seeking drivers and just last week was left clearly marked by circular shaped tyre marks.
The road is a busy national route carrying traffic to the south west of the country. Cllr Sean Drew has called on Gardai in North Meath to target and prosecute drivers engaged in the practice of spinning doughnuts on public roads.
The call follows the latest series of the black tyre marks which were made on the road.
“The road has been blighted once again by black unsightly tyre marks. This stretch is a regular target for dare-devil drivers.
“This is in fact dangerous driving and anyone caught engaging in it, if prosecuted and convicted, can be automatically disqualified,” said Cllr  Drew.
“This section of the N51 is covered extensively with black tyre marks and appears to be used as a playground for these ‘boy racers’ who are damaging the roads, while also putting themselves and other road users in danger by driving in this erratic manner.”
Cllr Drew has been contacted by many local motorists who have told him that they specifically avoid this stretch of road after dark, as they are fearful of encountering these reckless and irresponsible drivers.
“These drivers need to realise that they’re endangering other road users and themselves when engaging in this dangerous activity and gardaí in North Meath need to target these drivers,” concluded Cllr Drew.
