Meath students show off latest trash-ion

Eight innovative designs by Meath students have made it through to the regional final of the Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture competition which takes place in the Helix, Dublin, tomorrow.

Five local schools will be represented at the eastern final of the competition which challenges students to use waste and recycled material to create high end fashion. Dunshaughlin Community College leads the way with four entries.

The 80 eastern finalists will be cross examined by the judging panel which includes Dr Tracy Fahey (LSAD), Jane Leavey (Griffith College) and Rhys Ellis (Fashion Designer) who will determine entrant’s creativity and craftsmanship. The main judging panel will also be joined by previous winner José Varandas, who wowed audiences in 2012.
Colaiste na Mí students Aidan Smith, Lea Pesic and Artjoms Zagrebins have worked together over the past few months to create a work of art from old aluminium cans and newspapers. The dress design was based around the concept of Mainstream Media and how consumers can be made aware of bias and selectivity in journalism, propaganda in advertising and negativity spin in newsworthy articles. The aluminium cans were hand cut out into the shape of scales to represent armour that protects the user from negative news in an age or burgeoning positivity, particularly amongst a younger generation of media users.
