Simon Hogan goes on another run for Navan.

Happy hundred for Hogan

Flying Navan winger Simon Hogan can this week savour the fact that he has carved out a little piece of history for himself in the local rugby landscape.

Hogan played his 100th game for Navan in their rousing 47 to 37 point victory away to Kanturk last Saturday - and marked the occasion with a man-of-the-match display.

Now 38 Hogan has withstood the test of time and injuries to remain a integral part of the Navan side.

His searing runs up the wings have become a regular feature of Navan performances over the years.

A sprint forward is invariably followed by cut inside and with his twinkle-toed dexterity usually enough to take him past the grasping, empty-hands of would-be tacklers.

Hogan missed a sizeable chunk of last season with a serious leg injury but knowing he was close to his 100th appearance he was determined to continue his career.

Hogan played his part in helping Navan make the jump from Leinster League rugby to the senior ranks.
He marked his 100th appearnace in Kanturk with an impressive display although he, unusually, didn't get through for a try.

Instead the Navan touchdowns were scored by Rian Van Der Vyeer (two), Declan Bannon (two), Brian Hogge, James Ring and Robbie Watters. Bannon also contributed a series of points from conversions with some very accurate kicking.

To mark the occasion the Navan players and management gave Hogan a specially-designed jersey.

'We presented Simon with the jersey in the hotel on Saturday before the game but he opted to wear the normal jersey,' said Navan coach Alan Kingsley.

'Simon was brilliant for us, he was the man-of-the-match, and while he didn't score he made a big contribution to the win.'

Navan's next outing is a home game against Bruff on Saturday 29th October.
