Three held after Athboy Post Office raid

Gardai have arrested three men following an armed robbery on the post office in Athboy this afternoon.

At about 2.30pm, two males entered the post office in the town armed with a sawn-off shotgun. They threatened the lone female staff member and left the scene with a sum of money in a car driven by a third man.

Local gardai, along with gardai from Kells, responded to the alert and the getaway car was located crashed a short distance from the town at Frayne bog, where one person was arrested. The two other occupanbts fled from the scene.

Following a search of the area assisted by members of the armed Garda Regional Support Unit and the Garda Air Support Unit, two other men were located. A firearm was recovered as was a sum of money.

The trio, all in their 20s, are being detained under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Agsinst the State Act at Kells and Trim Garda Stations.
