Na fianna edge out simonstown in thriller

Dan Queeney lofted over a last-gasp point from a free to give Na Fianna a 1-12 to 0-14 victory over Simonstown in an entertaining SFC contest at Pairc Tailteann this evening.

The win means Na Fianna are through to the quarter-finals while Simonstown are out. Gaeil Colmcille and Dunshaughlin also progress from the group.

This was a heartbreaking defeat for Simonstown who missed a host of good goal-scoring opportunities including a second-half penalty with Michael Brennan firing the ball well wide from his spot-kick.

Shane O'Rourke, who had a good game, also missed a golden opportunity while Brennan also had an effort rebound off the woodwork.

Na Fianna trailed for much of the game but with a help of a superby-taken first-half goal from Dalton McDonagh they stayed in the hunt.

The contest remained close throughout the second-half and a draw looked likely until Queeney fired over the late point to snatch victory.
