Mary duff raising awareness and funds for cystic fibrosis

Meath’s renowned country singer, Mary Duff, who is patron of CF Ireland, has shown her support for people living with Cystic Fibrosis by taking part in a social media campaign aimed at raising awareness of the disease.
Mary has posted a Strawfie – a photo of her breathing through a straw while pinching her nose – on her official Facebook page to highlight the struggle to breathe experienced daily by those living with CF.
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life-shortening genetic condition – only half live to celebrate their 40th birthday. It causes the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, to become clogged with thick sticky mucus, resulting in chronic infections and inflammation of the lungs.
The ‘Breathe With Me Strawfie Challenge’ asks the general public to try breathing with the reduced lung capacity that many people with cystic fibrosis experience as their disease progresses.
The idea is to take a narrow drinking straw, seal your lips around it, pinch your nose (or use a noseclip) and try breathing just through the straw for 60 seconds.
To spread awareness about cystic fibrosis and help raise funds for vital research, people are then asked to take a selfie performing the straw breathing exercise (a Strawfie!) and post it on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram or other social media, with a comment about how the breathing exercise made them feel.
Participants can then make a donation by texting BWCF64 £3.00 (or other amount) to 70070 or visit https://www.justgiving.com/TWF-breathewithme/ to donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust (or alternatively they can donate to CF Ireland). They then nominate three friends/companies/clubs to take part in the challenge and help to spread the campaign further.
Mary has also recorded a song entitled ‘Breathe With Me’ for CF Ireland, due to be released in the autumn.
