Go bald for charity in honour of st patrick

Irelands first ‘St Baldricks Night’ will take place in Navan on the the eve of St Patrick’ Day.
The event, which involves head shaving, will take place in The Central Bar, Navan and the first two to go under the razor will be Paddy Pryle and David Browne.
The concept of St Baldrick was devised in 1999 by three Irish-American insurance executives from New York City, and grew from a single event to a nationwide effort in a relatively short period of time. It is now claimed to be the world’s first and largest volunteer fundraiser for childhood cancer research.
Events have taken place in all 50 US states and 28 countries. Since 2000, St Baldrick’s Foundation volunteers have organized nearly 4,200 head-shaving events and shaved over 190,500 heads, raising over $118 million for the life-saving research.
All the money raised by the Navan event will go to St John’s Cancer Care Ward, in the National Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.
One of the organisers, David Browne said; “I woke up this morning, looked at my hair and wondered if I knew what I was doing?”
He has been following the stories of two girls, daughters of friends of his, both of whom are battling cancer.
He hasn’t met either young girl but following their stories on Facebook, reassured him that he knew exactly what he was doing by arranging Ireland’s first St Baldricks night, a concept he first discovered in Florida, where business people shave their heads annually for children’s cancer services.
