Kate Stanley Brennan and Carmel Winters.

Three week tour of witness

Kate Stanley Brennan’s has just completed an outstanding run as Cathy in Wuthering Heights at the Gate Theatre. She is now eagerly anticipating the challenging role of ‘Shannon’ in Carmel Winters play ‘Witness.’

Eimear O'Kelly’s, Sunday Independent Review stated that 'The evening is undoubtedly Kate Stanley Brennan's: her Cathy has a terrifying, almost sadistic beauty, the wildness not so much a weapon as an insane driving force.'

Writer and Director Carmel Winters’ three week tour of “Witness”, begins at the Civic Theatre Tallaght from the 23rd to 28th of February, the Project Arts Centre Dublin from the 2nd to 7th March and the Everyman Theatre, Cork from the 9th to 14th of March 2015.

“Witness”, Based on Carmel’s award-winning feature film “Snap”, sensitively deals with the difficult subjects of abduction and abuse. Kate Stanley Brennan plays both characters superbly, 29-year-old Shannon and her 14-year-old son Stephen.

Shannon’s son Stephen has apparently committed a heinous act that shocked the nation. She has agreed to give a public account of what really happened, “to set the record straight” and deals with the distortion of certain facts in the public domain. As the play progresses, we get to know Sandra perhaps better than she knows herself, as we look into the heart of this woman’s struggle with motherhood. Meanwhile, her son relives his own history and a past that his mother denies.

Witness is a theatrical tour-de-force, written and Directed by Carmel Winters (Irish Times Best New Play winner for B for Baby) and Performed by leading actress Kate Stanley Brennan. ‘Witness’ is a spell-binding portrait of a mother and son, whose powerful story will pin you to your seats from start to breathless finish.

“A play that is riveting, satisfying, emotional and powerful, taking us into a deep, dark, chilling and shocking tale that will not leave you unmoved. Kate Stanley Brennan's performance is nothing short of perfection.'”

Alan Foran The Red Curtain Review.

“While it may seem surprising, a play that rips open the belly of family secrets can be uplifting, it is the almost mystical combination of Carmel’s writing and Kate’s acting that fills the heart. It is, without doubt, the best piece of theatre I have ever seen. You will leave the venue stunned and grateful that such a rare moment has been witnessed”.
