Meath midfielder Harry Rooney looks for options.

Tribesmen prove too strong for struggling meath

The size of the task facing Meath in their efforts to get out of the NFL Div 2 was forcefullly brought home to them today when they were defeated 1-12 to 2-13 by Galway at Pearse Stadium.

Meath fielded four newcomers to National League action in Conor McGill, Harry Rooney, Adam Flanagan and Joey Wallace and it proved to be a baptism of fire for them.

The visitors struggled to impose themselves on the game and at the break they trailed 0-5 to 1-6 having only played in fits and starts.

Meath's only goal was scored by substitute Jamie Queeney but it came late in the game and proved no more than a consolation.

Danny Cummins and Shane Walsh conjured up goals for the Tribesmen who were smarter in general player than their opponents. Cummins and Walsh ended up with 1-3 apiece.

Michael Newman topscored for the Royals with five points but four of those came from frees.

The next highest scorer was goalkeeper Paddy O'Rourke who fired over from two frees and one '45.' Stephen Bray was next on the list with two points.

Manager Mick O'Dowd will be looking for a huge improvement for the rest of the campaign if his team is going to have any chance of securing a promotion spot.
