Death of fr ned flynn dioceses oldest priest

 

The death has occurred of the oldest priest in the Diocese of Meath, Fr Edward (Ned) Flynn, the retired parish priest of Ballinabrackey.

Fr Flynn died peacefully in the loving care of the matron and staff of Portiuncula Nursing Home Multyfarnham, Co  Westmeath on Friday,  aged 99 years.

He was born on 4 January 1916 and ordained in the National Seminary, Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth in 1941.  Father Flynn’s appointments in the diocese of Meath included his role as Professor in St Finian’s College, Mullingar 1943- 1960, curate in Dunsany-Kilmessan 1960 – 1965, and Kells 1965 – 1972; parish priest in Donore 1972 – 1981;  in Ballinabrackey from 1981 until his retirement in 1995.  Fr Flynn has been a resident in Portiuncula Nursing Home, Multyfarnham since 2005.

He celebrated the 70th anniversary of his ordination in 2011.

Fr Flynn is regretted by his sister, Eithne, nieces, nephews, extended family, parishioners and friends. His remains are reposing at the nursing home on Sunday from 5pm  until 7 pm, with removal on Monday to arrive at the Church of the Assumption, Ballinabrackey, at 5pm, reposing there until 7pm, with Mass at 7.30pm. Funeral mass on Tuesday at 12 o'clock. Burial afterwards in the church grounds.
