Trim memorial to wwi fallen unveiled in trim

Over 100 people braved the elements on Sunday to attend the unveiling of a memorial in Trim dedicated to those who served in The Great War 1914-1918.
The memorial is the culmination of years of hard work by the 17 members of Trim’s Great War Memorial Committee, which is chaired by Phillip Cantwell.
Speaking at the event, RTÉ broadcaster and historian, Myles Dungan said such memorials show that Ireland has “woken up” to the tragedy of World War I and commended the work of local historians who have indentified more soldiers killed in action than are currently listed in the country’s national war records.
He also recalled some of the victims of the Great War including Patrick Nulty of Trim who died aged 21, and Peter Quinn of Trim who died aged 20. Both, he said, were “too young to vote but not too young to die”.
The memorial was unveiled by Paddy Clarke, whose father was killed in action at Flanders just two months before he was born. Speaking before the crowd, 96 year-old Paddy said: “I am deeply honoured to perform the unveiling of this monument in commemmoration of those of this locality who served, fought and were killed in the Great War.”
