Penalty pain for OMP
There was no joy for under-strength OMP as they lost out to Dublin side Bangor Celtic in the Leinster Junior Cup but only after a penalty shoot-out at the MDL today.
The sides were level, 3-3, at the end of extra-time and it went to a shoot-out with Bangor Celtic winning 4-2.
At one stage in the opening half OMP led 2-0 with well-taken goals from Andrew Kearney and Ivan Halpin.
It was a lead gained very much against the run of play and just before the interval Sean Casey pulled a goal back for Bangor. It was no more than they deserved.
Early in the second-half the Dublin side added another goal but this time the ball was knocked to the net by OMP left-back Dave O'Kane for an unfortunate own goal.
The MDL side regained the lead when the skilful Nigel Kennedy was fouled in the box and Kearney scored from the spot-kick.
Undaunted Bangor equalised when Robbie Byrne swept home from close range. In the dying seconds of normal time Paddy Markey had a great chance to win it for the Meath side but he headed over.
When no further goals were scored in extra-time it was onto the penalties where Bangor proved more accurate to advance.
