Donaghmore/Ashbourne claim MFC title

After making a slow start Donaghmore/Ashbourne found their scoring touch to defeat Dunboyne 3-5 to 0-7 in the MFC at Pairc Tailteann today.

It didn't look good for Donaghmore/Ashbourne at the interval when they trailed 1-1 to 0-5 but they upped their game considerably in the second-half.

Michael Deegan scored Donaghmore/Ashbourne's only first-half point and that came from a free on 19 minutes in what was a stop, start opening 30 minutes with both sides giving the ball away far too easily.

Just before the break Darragh McGovern stole in for a goal to give his side hope.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne's second goal arrived on 49 minutes when Jamie Murtagh despatched the ball to the net with a low drive and put his team 2-3 to 0-7 in front.

With two minutes remaining Donaghmore/Ashbourne's Cian Wall was fouled in the Dunboyne square. Deegan stepped up to take the penalty. His shot was well saved by Dunboyne goalkeeper Andrew Markey.

The ball, however, broke to Deegan who fired to the net. A minute later Thomas McGovern slotted over a point to seal the win for Ian Dowd's side.
