Born 2 Perform Stage School defends All-Ireland title

Gavin Quigley’s Born 2 Perform Stage School defended their All Ireland title as they were crowned All Ireland Variety Champions 2013  in St Patrick’s College, Dublin.

Following Born 2 Perform Stage School’s tremendous success in winning the All Ireland Variety Show in 2012 as well as recieving awards such as Backstage Behaviour and Star of the Future, Gavin Quigley started prepartations for All Ireland Variety Show 2013. With the All Ireland title 2012 under their belts, B2P knew that they had to pull out all the stops to top last years show and regain the title.

Some 100 students aged six to 29 years old all set off to the big smoke to give St.Pats everything they had. Butterflies started to appear as well as excitement as Born 2 Perform were the first group to take to the stage. As the curtains lifted the students started off with a spark as Born 2 Perform showcased their orginal Weather Scene starting with ‘It’s Raining Men’, which soon turned to a beaming atmosphere with ‘Sunshine After the Rain’. It was followed by ‘Blame It On The Weatherman’ which displayed graceful vocals. This section was closed by the electric engery shown in ‘Walking On Sunshine’, which the judges commended.

The audience was embraced with the presence of B2P’s very own Sister Act. This scene was packed with joy and humour as Louise Steele impressed the judges by taking on Sister Mary Clarence. Sparkles and sequins then delighted the audience with a tap to a medley from the popular musical ‘Singing In The Rain’. This adorable number had the whole crowd cheering.

Born 2 Perform next transported the entire audience Around The World as they performed numerous numbers with various dance styles. This section included ‘Dancing In The Street’, followed by ‘Walk Like An Eygptian’ and then a freshing Caribbean feeling in ‘Rocka Hula Lua’. The audience was carried all the way to India for ‘Jai Ho’ and then to Africa for ‘Waka Waka’. This scene came to a beautiful climax with a stunning performance of ‘Sing’. This number showed the true meaning behind Born 2 Perform. If we all come together as one, we can achieve anything.

Laughter filled the hall as the audience where in hysterics with Born 2 Perform’s orginal comic sketches. Afterwards the hall was taken over with attitude as students performed an action packed hip hop which included ‘Swagger Jagger’, ‘Push It’, ‘It’s Like That’ and ‘Can’t Touch This’. This brought back a real taste of old school. The audience were then spellbound as they were brough back to the troubles and heartache of the people during the French Revoltion in Born 2 Perform’s ‘Les Mis’ section. Sinere emotion was felt by all on and off stage.

Born 2 Perform Stage School’s sensational spectale finished of with a powerful scene from the current musical ‘Matilda’ which is adapted from the fantastic movie ‘Matilda’. The scene saw the complete stage school rebelling against the horrid Ms.Trunchbull in a bid to get freedom. This amazing scene showcased exceptional power and vocals with songs such as ‘School Song’, ‘Bruce’ and ‘Revolting Children’ . Born 2 Perform Stage School’s show came to a close with the magnificant ‘When I Grow Up Reprise’, you could sense the emotion from every single student standing on stage as well as the devotion for what they do. It was clear to every audience member that all students where right were they wanted to be, performing on stage. As the curtains closed it didn’t matter what the outcome was, every student did themselves, their families, friends, towns and of course Born 2 Perform proud.

The hall was brimming with anticaption as everyone awaited the results. The judges gave many awards out in which Born 2 Perform recieved Backstage Behaviour Award, Judges Choice for Matilda and Star of the Future – Jessica Owens who was awarded this award two years in a row. Gavin Quigley and staff also got to award a student as their ‘Star of the School’, this award is given to Kim Ward for her work with the stage school over the past 2 years.

The judges highly commended Born 2 Perform Stage School’s show and after what seemed like a lifetime, Born 2 Perform were announced the All Ireland Variety Show winners 2013. The hall erupted into cheers as Gavin Quigley was handed the glistening trophy with great pride. Amidst the tears and smiles the students were presented with their gold medals.

Gavin Quigley commented about how he was over the moon saying: ‘Dreams don't often come true, but mine most certainly did last night. Winning the All Ireland Variety Show 2 years in a row! I couldn't have asked for anything more from our extremely talented students. I'm beaming with pride. Not only did we walk away as the winners we also won eight out of 13 trophies! I'm on cloud nine. Thank you to all who made it possible without your help, guidance and friendship it wouldn't have been possible’.

Born 2 Perform Stage School boasts over 300 children across the North East with classes in Carrickmacross, Castleblayney, Monaghan Town, Ardee and Kingscourt. They are currently preparing for their annual pantomine this coming Feburary which had four sold out shows last year. Born 2 Perform All Ireland winners are also training extremely hard in preparation for the semi-finals of Dance School Stars competition Top Dance Mini Variety Show in the TLT Drogheda on Sunday 3rd November.
