Ashbourne Fire Victim Named
The man who died in a fatal fire in Ashbourne on Tuesday night has been named locally as Sean Farrelly.
He was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire which engulfed his cottage at Archerstown, close to Ashbourne Rugby Club on Tuesday night.
Shortly after 10pm fire crews in Ashbourne and Dunshaughlin were alerted to a domestic fire and were confronted with a massive blaze. Gardai had attempted to search the building, but were beaten back by the flames.
All rooms were engulfed in fire and the roof of the building was collapsing into the house. Family and friends of Mr Farrelly looked on as fire fighters smothered the fire to allow fire crews to enter the building.
Using breathing apparatus, they entered the building and located the Mr Farrelly inside the rear door.
ESB crews attended and cut power to the building. Fire fighting continued late into the night. Final damping down was complete at 3am and the scene handed over to the Gardai for investigation.
