The scene at Navan Shopping Centre on Sunday evening

Deluge causes damage to Navan businesses

Torrential rain which hit the county on Sunday afternoon caused substantial damage around Meath and in particularly in Navan, where the deluge caused part of a ceiling at Navan Shopping Centre to collapse, damaged the roof at Supervalu at the Beechmount Shopping Centre and flooded part of Caffreys furniture store in Beechmount Homepark.
The deluge saw several centimetres of rain fall in just over half an hour in Navan on Sunday afternoon and roofs and guttering around the town had difficulty coping with the weight of the water.
Part of the ceiling at Navan Shopping Cenrtre caved in at around 6pm as saturated plasterboard on the ceiling fell own.
The area had been cordoned off before hand, so nobody was injured.
Hartens newsagents, which was close to the scene of the ceiling collapse was flooded with up to an inch of water, but all businesses were back up and running by the following morning.
Allies Barbers at the far end of the shopping centre also suffered damage as water leaked into the shop from the ceiling.
In Beechmount Homepark, the damage to Caffrey's Furniture store was discovered on Monday morning.
Half of the warehouse at the store was damaged and the window displays were damaged when the sheer weight of water broke the guttering over the windows. Business continued as usual, however.
At Beechmount Supervalu, roof tiles were damaged and a small section of the shop flooded. The shop closed early on Sunday evening, but was open again for business as usual on Monday morning.
