The 1917 photograph

Postcard to be created for St Kieran Festival

The St Kieran Festival which takes place in Carnaross over the August Bank Holiday weekend will see a photograph taken of the large crowd at the ceremonies, which will be used to produce a postcard.
A framed copy of an existing postcard,  believed to have been taken in 1917 when Countess Markievicz visited the well, will be on display at this year's festival.

Names will be recorded of those in this year's photo,  so that in years to come future generations will know who is in the postcard.

The old postcard was on display last Friday night when a large crowd gathered in the Carnaross Inn for the launch of the festival.

Patrick Farrelly Chairman of the Festival Committee  predicted it would be an action packed Festival Weekend with a ceili and barn dance, vigil walk, ceremonies at the well, field day, fancy dress party and a car treasure hunt.

During the evening, Malachy Plunkett identified his granduncle, Richard McDonald in the old postcard and said he had a photograph at home of the Countess and his Grand Uncle.

Also on on view at the launch were the crowns created from stainless steel and bronze especially for the festival.  The King and Queen of Kieran will be judged from the most originally dressed, male and female at the Fancy Dress Party in Carnaross Inn on Sunday 4th August.
