Don Cossack tumbles at Navan

All the talk after the grade one Navan Novice Hurdle today was about the fall of Gordon Elliott-trained Don Cossack after jumping the last in pursuit of the Willie Mullins-trained Pont Alexandre which made a stunning Irish debut for an impressive 13-length victory. Don Cossack (8/15) was struggling to get on terms at that stage of the race and it looked like a losing battle going to the last. The Gigginstown horse seemed to stumble after the last and crashed out giving champion jockey Davy Russell a third successive fall on the day. Noel Meade's Busty Brown was left second behind the 3/1 winner which had made just one start in France back in May when successful at Cholet. It was left to Tony Martin to fly the Meath flag with a double which formed part of a fantastic four-timer for Walsh. The Martin-trained Wingtips (1/4) gained an overdue success when cruising to victory in the two-mile maiden hurdle. Martin completed the double when Matsukaze, running in a handicap for the first time, took the two-mile handicap hurdle.
