Hall of Fame for Joe and Mary Gannon

Meath GAA Co Board broke new ground last night at the annual awards evening when the Hall of Fame accolade was presented to a husband and wife for the first time. Presented annually to a person or persons who have given outstanding service to the GAA in Meath, the list of previous winners includes Peter McDermott, Kevin McConnell, Brian Smyth and Bertie Cunningham. Last night Killyon / Clonard stalwarts Joe and Mary Gannon were added to the roll of honour and received a standing ovation from the invited guests as they were presented with the award. Joe was a very popular referee and his wife Mary was the first female umpire in the county when she began wearing the white coat at the goalposts many, many years ago as she assisted her husband. Outgoing Co Board chairman Barney Allen made the presentation in what will probably be one of his last presentations as chairman ahead of next Monday night's annual convention.
