Off track… but still on tour: cyclists gear up for Meath Heritage Cycle

Local woman Bernadette Finnegan and family may have found themselves off track at the launch of this year's An Post Meath Heritage Cycle Tour, but very much on course to complete the 11km Family spin. The tour takes place on Sunday 29th July. This year's tour offers four different distances to choose from: 11km Family Spin - A flat route which is suitable for all the family. Children under the age of 12 years must be accompanied by an adult and possess some level of cycling experience. 50km Tara Loop - A popular route which has, in parts, been reversed in direction and includes an additional 10km this year. It is a relatively flat route with a moderate climb to the Hill of Tara. 100km Royal Tour - This route is changed in parts, while the flatter aspects have remained the same. Participants would need a good level of cycling fitness. 160km Royal Challenge - A new route for 2012 brings cyclists to the east of the county and sees the introduction of Sliabh Breagh (known locally as Downey's Mountain). The route remains tough and challenging and is not for the faint-hearted - a cut-off time applies on this route. The nominated charity for this event is the Meath branch of the Alzheimer's Society. Alzheimer Society Meath is part of a nationwide charity that aims to provide people with all forms of dementia, their families and carers with the necessary support to maximise their quality of life. All funds raised will be used by the Whistlemount Day Centre, Navan, to assist in the provision of specialist care for those suffering with Alzheimer's. A French/European Market will add to the atmosphere at the start/finish area in Trim and, for the convenience of participants, Aura Trim Leisure Centre will provide complimentary showers and changing facilities on the day. A number of local hotels and guesthouses will provide discounted rates to those participating on the tour. This year sees the renewal of the successful working partnership between An Post, the Irish Sports Council, Meath County Council, Meath Tourism, Meath Cycling Clubs, Gardai, Civil Defence, Trim Tidy Towns and Meath Local Sports Partnership who, together, promise to deliver a highly enjoyable and quality event.
