Six stolen laptops held no personal info: council

Six laptop computers stolen in a burglary this week at Meath County Council's offices in Navan did not contain any confidential or personal information, the council has confirmed. The council has moved to reassure the public that there was no sensitive data on the laptops and that the only content on the computers was the register of electors, which is a public document. The computers had been ready for use in polling stations for Thursday's referendum on the Fiscal Stability Treaty and the only files they contained was the Meath register of electors. Other than this, the computers had only been used for training purposes. Gardai are investigating the burglary, which occurred between midnight and 7am on Monday morning. A number of offices were ransacked, including the office of the county manager, Tom Dowling. To read the full story see this week's Meath Chronicle.
