Runners help generate funds for Summerhill park project

The second annual Summerhill 4k/10k Road Race, a fundraiser for the Summerhill Community Park and Playground project, attracted some 306 runners. The sun was shining as the race began at 11.30am with music provided by DJ Eddie Byrne, establishing a fun atmosphere that continued for the whole event. The participants of the race were as mixture of locals and those not so local. One entrant even flew in from London to compete. All the local athletic and running clubs were well supported, including Trim, Na Fianna and Kiltale, as well as Raheny Shamrocks and Clonmel. One aspect of note was the amount of children who participated. Shane O'Connor celebrated his birthday by being the first runner in the 4k at 13 minutes 55 followed two seconds later by his brother, Bryan. The first junior boys to past the post were also brothers. Ciaran Leech pipped his brother, Conor, by only 15 seconds at 14 minutes five seconds. The winning lady in the 4k was Mary Hanley, followed swiftly by Teresa Ennis. The girls' under-18 category was won by Alison Daly with Emma Neary coming second. The 10k race was won by Niall Shiel and second place went to David Fitzpatrick. Fiona Diskin was first lady in by some margin and with Laura Ward in second place. After the race was completed, the runners took a welcome rest at the community centre where refreshments were laid on. Christina Burns from Summerhill Physiotherapy was also on hand both before and after the race for anyone requiring a sports massage. The committee thanked sponsors Gillan's Londis, Cara Quill Water and Aura in Trim as well as local gardai, who were of great support both before and during the race; all the volunteers, without their teamwork the race would not have been the success it was, and Martin Gavigan, the race co-ordinator. It is hoped that the playground, picnic and adult fitness area planned for Summerhill will be up and running by the end of the summer.
