Widespread regret was occasioned at the passing of Sr Carmel (Mary Philomena) Mulligan, after a short illness on 17th January at Our Lady's Hospital, Navan. Sr Carmel was a member of the Mulligan family of Dunderry, a daughter of the late Patrick and Catherine Mulligan, and entered the Drogheda Convent of Mercy in 1947. She joined the nursing staff of St Mary's, Drogheda, in 1953, and served as assistant matron there from 1968 until 1976. She was appointed Matron of St Joseph's Hospital, Trim in 1976, and worked there until her retirement in 1994. The enormous regard with which she was held in the community was evidenced by the large numbers attending her Funeral. Her Mercy companions, family and friends, colleagues and relatives of former residents of St Mary's and St Joseph's remember her with affection and gratitude. Predeceased by her brothers, John and Thomas, she is survived by brothers, Finian and Denis; sisters, Kathleen O'Reilly and Angela Keogh; sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. The funeral mass took place in St Patricks Church, Trim, celebrated by Fr Mark Mohan. Burial took place in Dunderry cemetery. A month's memory Mass will be held on Sunday 26th February in St Patricks Church, Trim at 11am. __________________________________________________________ John Boyle, Drumree There was widespread sadness following the untimely death of Mr John Boyle, Crosskeys, Drumree, on 7th February last, at Beaumont Hospital, aged 40. The Drumree native was educated at Culmullen National School and St Finian's College, Mullingar, and worked with Irish Life for more than 20 years. Deceased had a keen interest in sport, both as a participant and spectator. He played juvenile football with St Martin's GFC and won an under-13 Community Games medal. He was on Drumree GFC's Division 3 team that achieved success in 1988, and a decade later was goalkeeper on the Drumree team which won the Meath Junior Football Championship, defeating St Mary's of Donore and going on to win the Leinster title, overcoming Ballyroan of Laois at an exciting Leinster final in Dunshaughlin. A review of that championship described John Boyle as "a solid and reliable goalie throughout both the county and provincial campaigns." Mr Boyle served as the Drumree club's secretary for several years, and was a proud Meath supporter. Deceased helped the Drumree-based College Rovers soccer team to achieve success in the nineties. A keen racegoer, he was involved in founding the Drumree Racing Club in 1995, which enjoyed successes with French Project and Honeyschoice in Ballinrobe. Later, he joined the Neighbours Racing Club, which proved to be very successful. This syndicate based around Dunshaughlin and Drumree saw Lights and Music winning at both Fairyhouse and Punchestown in the same year. Its greatest triumph was undoubtedly the victory of More Rainbows in the Galway Hurdle in 2005, with Robbie Power on board. Prior to his untimely death, deceased was enjoying and keeping in touch with the success of Medical Card, which won a Grade 2 novice chase in Naas on 21st January last, just a couple of weeks before his passing. Mr Boyle is survived by his brothers Fr Gerry, PP, Multyfarnham; Mick and Alan, both Drumree; sister Anne, Drumree; sister-in-law, Anne; nephew, Thomas and niece, Lucy; relatives, neighbours and friends. The funeral took place from St Martin's Church, Culmullen, to the the adjoining cemetery. __________________________________________________________ Teresa Murray, Athboy The recent passing of Mrs Teresa Murray, Wardstown, Athboy, occasioned widespread sadness. Mrs Murray, aged 87, died on 9th February last at Millbury Nursing Home, Navan. A native of Kildalkey, she was a member of the Harmon family, and was predeceased by her husband, James Murray, on 18th March 1986. Deceased is survived by her sons, daughters, sister, brothers, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, sisters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her many friends and neighbours. The funeral took place from St James' Church, Athboy, to St James' Cemetery. __________________________________________________________ Patsy McCabe, Wilkinstown Mr Patsy McCabe, Ladyrath, Wilkinstown, who has died aged 92, was a building contractor who was responsible for many well-known buildings across the county and further afield. He passed away at Millbury Nursing Home, Navan, on 11th February last. In the 1980s, deceased was one of the largest employers in the county, with 125 people working with his building company. With a team of gifted craftsmen, he was responsible for prominent buildings such as Navan Fire Station, Navan Post Office, Beaufort College, Navan, the Church of Ss Patrick and Seachnall, Dunshaughlin, Virginia Church, Lobinstown's Church of the Holy Cross; and the Church of St Louis, Rathkenny, as well as Ballyfermot Employment Exchange and Laurel Lodge Junior School. In later years, deceased dedicated his time to his garden and greenhouse. Despite failing health, he was active up to his admittance to hospital last November. The care he received from both Dr Finn, Navan, and the staff in the Millbury Nursing Home will be long remembered by his family. He is survived by his brothers, Charlie, Ardee, and Shane, Kells; sisters, Gretta, Dundalk and Ena, Kells; brother-in-law, Michael McShane, Dundalk; sister-in-law, May McCabe, Ardee; lifetime friend and carer, Ann Callaghan, Cloverhill; nephews, nieces, and a large of friends. It was fitting that Mr McCabe's funeral Mass was celebrated in Rathkenny Church, the church he built and had such pride in. Fr John Hogan, PP, Rathkenny, was assisted by Fr John Byrne, PP, Kells, and Fr Michael Meade, PP, Donore. Burial took place in the adjoining cemetery. __________________________________________________________ Aisling Ní Lorcáin, Navan There was widespread sadness following the death on 8th February last of Ms Aisling Ní Lorcáin, Athlumney Castle, Navan, aged 42, at Beacon Hospital, Sandyford, Dublin 18. A native of Goatstown, Dublin 14, deceased was a nurse at the orthopaedic department of Our Lady's Hospital, Navan, since January 2000, and had lived in Navan since August 1999, when she and her husband-to-be, Ivan Longmore, moved to the town. They were married on 30th December 1999, and two daughters Ailbhe (15) and Bláthnaid (10) followed. Ms Ní Lorcáin was well loved throughout the hospital, and will be very badly missed. She is recalled as a private person who did not seek attention, but at the same time could be gregarious with a love of life. She was a devoted mother to her two daughters. Ms Ní Lorcáin was diagnosed with illness in October 2011. Deceased is survived by her husband, Ivan Longmore; daughters, Ailbhe and Bláthnaid Longmore; all Athlumney Castle, Navan; parents, Aistín O Lorcáin and Caitlin Ní Lorcáin, Farmhill Park, Goatstown; sisters, Úna and Mairead; and brothers, Piaras and Aistín; relatives and friends. The funeral Mass took place from St Mary's Church, Navan to Old Kilcarne Cemetery, Johnstown. __________________________________________________________ Mary Horan, Summerhill The sudden death of Mrs Mary Horan, Castlelawns, Summerhill, at her residence, was the source of considerable shock and sadness. She was aged 54 and died on Friday 10th February last. A native of Cloneymeath, Moynalvey, she was a member of the Kelly family. Deceased had a great interest in sport, and was an avid Meath GAA supporter and Liverpool FC fan. In her earlier days, she had played women's football with Moynalvey. She was devoted to her husband and family. Mrs Horan is survived by her husband, Frankie; daughters, Geraldine and Theresa; twin sons, Francis and Keith; and grandson, Logan; and the family is very appreciative of the support from neighbours in Castlelawn and Summerhill Community Centre on their sudden bereavement. The funeral Mass took place in the Church of the Nativity, Moynalvey, to the adjoining cemetery. __________________________________________________________ Frank McEvoy, Kilkenny The death occurred in Kilkenny on 25th January last of Mr Frank McEvoy (86), an important figure in Kilkenny's literary history, who had Meath family roots. Son of William McEvoy and Frances Lenehan, he was a Kilkenny native and spent his early life with maternal family connections in Kilskyre, attending St Finian's College, Mullingar. Returning to Kilkenny, he continued his education at St Kieran's College, and worked as a solicitor's clerk. Deceased entered local government service with Kilkenny County Committee of Agriculture, from which he retired in 1987. He then ran a small select bookshop, Hebron Books, on Kilkenny's High Street. In 1965 he married Marie Finn. She died in November of the following year. He was a prominent member of Kilkenny Arts Society, Kilkenny Literary Society and Kilkenny Archaeological Society, and was editor of the St Kieran's College Record. In 2005, a group of friends produced 'Short Schrift', a compilation of essays and short pieces to mark his 80th birthday. Mr McEvoy is survived by his son Feargal, daughter-in-law Lorraine and grandchildren Ruby, Cian and Niall; three sisters and two brothers.
