Molly Fitzsimons.

Lots of bald heads evident in Oristown after charity event

The fundraising head shave for little Molly Fitzsimons in Colwell's Pub, Oristown, on Saturday night was a fun-filled affair, as up to 12 people had their heads shaved and legs waxed. The large crowd who attended enjoyed the spectacle as local hairdressers Helen Ingles and Tara McEntee shaved numerous heads and Laura Whitty did the waxing on several brave volunteers. There were many bald heads and smooth legs by the end of the night and both those who were being waxed and shaved, and those doing the the job, received enormous encouragement from the crowd. There was also a major raffle with lots of prizes, and Peadar Farrelly and All Shades provided the music. The night was a fundraiser to send brave 18 month-old Molly Fitzsimons to Lourdes. Molly, from Rodstown, Kells, has cerebral palsy and spastic diplegia which causes tightness in her lower extremities and, as she gets older, she may have trouble doing the everyday things other people take for granted. Despite being a beautiful, happy 18 month-old girl, already her condition is showing signs of affecting Molly as she isn't able to sit up unaided or to roll or walk. Because she is so young, doctors have yet to decide what medical procedures lie ahead for her. Molly is a daughter of Michael and Sinead Fitzsimons and the local community has decided to send her to Lourdes as the family waits to find out what is in store for their daughter. This week her uncle, Paul Fitzsimons, said there had been a terrific turn-out for the event and the family was delighted with the response. A further fundraiser is planned for Clonmellon in the coming weeks and Molly will travel to Lourdes at the end of May. Paul explained that she may need surgery as she is older, but at the moment, it is a matter of waiting to see what the doctors say in a few years' time. "We are just keeping our fingers crossed and will have to wait and see," he said.
