Time to reprint the Punt

Dear sir - Every fibre in my body feels that last week's catastrophic Fine Gael/Labour budget, which was dressed up by spin, as policy to save the euro, in reality is the pathway to the permanent surrender of Irish sovereignty to European fiscal union. It is totally perplexing that there is no political contingency plan in place to reprint the Punt again and align Ireland with the sterling currency with some control over the future sovereign financial destiny of the future generations of this emerald isle. On this basis alone, we enter a whole new era in Ireland, where its just not logical to trust the coalition parties of Fine Gael/Labour to manage our national finances. The biggest danger to Ireland, to the future of Ireland comes from people believing Meath's Damien English TD on radio talk shows and television and his political empathy for fiscal union, the poor, students and mothers of Ireland. Clearly Fine Gael have obtained maximum revenues in this budget and a clearly opportunistic Fine Gael makes its small partner in government, Labour, look like a ruthless monster author of a budget from hell. Labour have politically failed to curb Fine Gaels right wing excesses in Budget 2011 in areas of social protection, education and public sector reform, in the midst of a governmental regime of austerity, in making paupers out of the most vulnerable in Irish society. All that is open to Labour political survival must be to abandon support for Fine Gael and give the voting public an opportunity to give their view on the most humiliating episodes of election betrayal by Fine Gael/Labour government ever seen in a modern Irish democracy. Yours, Gerard O'Brien, Flowerhill Grove, Navan.
