Cllrs' presidential moves 'well thought out'

Dear sir - I must say I allowed myself a little chuckle as I read the article by John Donohoe in last week's edition entitled 'Dazed and Confused in Fianna Fail.' For the record, I am very clear as to who I will be voting for this Thursday. My former Fianna Fail National Executive colleague Sean Gallagher will receive my number one vote and I was delighted to have supported his nomination in Meath County Council, which facilitated his entry to the race. Thankfully, we live in a democracy that engages PR voting so my second preference will go to Mary Davis who also has several high profile FF people working on her campaign. I was delighted to meet with her daughter Rebecca when she held a coffee morning in support of her mother's campaign in Ryan's Pub and I extended a courteous welcome to her team in our town. Finally, your reporter correctly points out that earlier in the year I, along with my colleague Cllr Tommy Reilly, wrong footed the Fine Gael councillors in Meath by proposing Senator David Norris in a move designed to expose the fact that they wanted to stop people entering the race to protect their own candidate. In hindsight we need not have bothered as Fine Gael have hung their unfortunate candidate Gay Mitchell out to dry in an even worse fashion than poor Austin Currie in 1990. Rather than being confused, I can assure you that every political move we make is well thought out. I look forward to the votes being counted on Friday when our new President is elected. Yours, Cllr Shane Cassells MCC, Navan.
