Green diesel needs to be abolished

Dear sir - Clearly there have been price rises in diesel at our filling stations in Meath over recent months. Hence a market for cheap diesel' which has seen large scale illict fuel laudering plants emerge throughout the border counties has being created, making millions at a loss of tax revenue to the Irish tax payer. Such operations simply purchase green diesel and wash out the green dye which restores the diesel to a neutral colour enabling it to be sold on to petrol stations at a profit of 50 cents per litre. The limited manpower and resources available to Irish Customs officers means little real progress can ever be made to discover fuel laudering plants. Clearly legitimate retailers whom employ staff at petrol stations are unable to compete if the problem is not tackled head on. Thus the onus is on our elected politicans in Meath at county council level to bring a motion to the next full council meeting for a moritorium on the use of green diesel in Meath to be referred to An Taoiseach for immediate legal abolishment throughout Ireland. In essence, farmers and fishermen whom normally use green diesel should buy ordinary disel at the pumps and be refunded on production of their receipts the difference in price. Laundered diesel undermines legimate local jobs in Meath, is a cost to the Exchequer and drags us all down. Yours, Gerard O'Brien, Flower Hill Grove, Navan.
