There was considerable sadness in the Trim area and surrounds following the passing of Mrs Margaret Egan, Castle Abbey, Trim, on 23rd July last. Aged 88, Mrs Egan passed away at our Lady's Hospital, Navan. Mrs Egan and her late husband, Tommy, were well-known in the town where they established the landmark shop, The Bon Bon, on Emmet Street. Deceased was a native of Edgeworthstown, Co Longford, and studied in Rathmines College of Commerce before moving to Trim, where she and her husband established The Bon Bon in 1946. The shop was renowned for its quality of service, for confectionery, fruit, vegetables, fish and giftware. The Egans developed one of the first ice cream parlours in the county which served as a meeting point for the youth of the town and surrounding areas. In 1972, they sold the business and established a number of other businesses in the town, most notably Candy and Cards on High Street. After a number of years of successful trading, this was sold and Mr and Mrs Egan retired. Deceased was regarded as a very astute business person, who with Thomas, raised retailing standards in Trim. The regard in which she was held was reflected in the large and diverse nature of the attendance at her funeral which was notable in the number of existing and retired traders and shopkeepers present. Mrs Egan was the last surviving member of her generation of the Canning family of Edgeworthstown, predeceased by brothers, John and Eamon, and sisters, Betty, Bid and Nan. Her husband, Thomas, passed away in September 2003. She is survived by her daughters, Gloria Goggins and Sylvia Fitzsimons, both Trim; niece, Lilly Conlon, Trim; grandchildren, Olga O'Sullivan and Erika Goggins, both Kilmessan; Kirk and Petra Fitzsimons, both Trim; Amanda Geraghty, Athboy; sons-in-law, Michael Goggins, and Joseph Fitzsimons, both Trim; great grandchildren, Lauren and Isabel O'Sullivan, Kilmessan; brothers-in-law, Laurie Egan and Frank Egan, both Trim; relatives, neighbours and friends. The funeral Mass in St Patrick's Church, Trim, was celebrated by Fr Sean Henry, PP, with organist, Miriam Mooney, soloist Matt Gilsenan, and a very special rendition of communion hymns by granddaughter, Erika Goggins. The burial was in St Loman's Cemetery. _____________________________________________________________ Betty McDonagh, Rathcairn Mrs Betty McDonagh, Rathcairn, Athboy, who has died, was a member of the Carroll family, Crowenstown, Delvin, and was predeceased by her husband, Martin, in 1992. She was aged 73 and passed away at her residence on 8th August last, causing widespread sadness. Mrs McDonagh lived in the heart of the Rathcairn Gaeltacht for over 53 years, as a wife and mother. She will be remembered as a great woman for providing tea and homemade brown bread, which all her neighbours enoyed when they visited. Deceased was a kind-hearted woman who had time for young and old, and will be sadly missed by her family and neighbours. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Gardiner, London; sons, Peter, Rathcairn, Kevin, London, and Marty, Navan; brothers; sisters; son-in-law; daughters-in-law; grandchildren; great grandchild; extended family; relatives; friends; and neighbours. The funeral took place from Rathcairn Church to St James Cemetery, Athboy. ____________________________________________________________ Patrick Farrell, Rathmolyon The passing of Mr Patrick (Pat) Farrell, Kilmore, Rathmolyon, Enfield, casued widespread sadness. Aged 80, he passed away at his residence on 18th August last. Deceased was a carpenter, who loved sport and especially enjoyed following the fortunes of the Meath Gaelic football team. He was always interested in anything his children and grandchildren were involved in. Predeceased by his wife, Marie, in February 2006, Mr Farrell is survived by his daughters, Ettie Lewis, Kilmore, Rathmolyon and Bridgie Slevin, Rathcore, Enfield; sons, Terry, Kilmore, Rathmolyon, Sean, Freffans, Trim, and Paddy, Rathcore, Enfield; their families, relatives and friends. The funeral took place from St Michael's Church, Rathmolyon, to Kill Cemetery. _____________________________________________________________ Donald Rennicks, Bohermeen There was shock at the untimely and tragic death of Mr Donald Rennicks, Grange, Bohermeen, Navan, on Monday, at the age of 59. Mr Rennicks established Grange Farm Produce, a well-known fruit and vegetable distribution business. He was also well-known through his involvement in athletics and clay pigeon shooting, and also played football with Bohermeen. When Bohermeen Athletic Club was revived in 1969 he was elected as secretary and treasurer. He was involved in the club as an official and runner for a few years. Deceased was a regular on the annual cycling spins in aid of Our Lady's Hospital organised by Navan Road Club and Bohermeen Cycling Club for a few years, driving the support van. During his career as a footballer he was a member of the Bohermeen IFC winning squad in 1973 and figured as a subsstitute in the 1974 SFC final won by Summerhill. In later years, Donald Rennicks achieved a lot of success in clay pigeon shooting and represented Ireland in a number of international competitions. The Irish Clay Pigeon Shooting Association has posted a statement on its website, paying tribute to Mr Rennicks, saying: "It is with great regret that we have learned of the passing of Don Rennicks. "Don was a long time member of the ICPSA and had been a constant on the Ireland DTL Team for many, many years. We would like to extend our condolences to his family and extensive circle of friends." Mr Rennicks worked with McDermott Eggs for a number of years before setting up Grange Farm Produce. He is survived by his wife, Mairead; brother Sean, Durhamstown, Bohermeen; sisters, Marie Coyle, Navan; Patricia Kelly, Jamestown, Bohermeen; nephews, nieces; cousins; and friends. His removal is scheduled to take place this evening (Wednesday) to St Ultan's Church, Bohermeen, at 7.30pm, with the funeral Mass on Thursday at 11am. _____________________________________________________________ Matthew Tevlin, Kilskyre There was widespread regret following the death on 14th August last of Mr Matthew (Mattie) Tevlin, Boltown, Kilskyre, Kells, at Connolly Memorial Hospital Blanchardstown, aged 84. A member of the Tevlin family of Carnaross, deceased moved to Kilskyre after his marriage. He was a member of the farming community all his life and was a regular face at the local sales marts, where he had many friends. He had a keen interest in the GAA and followed Meath's fortunes closely. Mr Tevlin is survived by his wife, Eveline; sons, Paul and Noel; daughter Elizabeth; daughters-in-law; son-in-law; sister Mary Daly; brothers John, Paddy and Phil; grandchildren; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The funeral took place on 17th August last from the Church of St Alphonsus Ligouri, Kilskyre, to the adjoining cemetery. The Mass was concelebrated by Fr Brogan, Kilskyre, Monsignor Hanley, Carnaross and Fr Malone, Kells. A month's memory Mass will be held in Kilskyre Church on 25th September at 11.15am.
