'Heel snapping' by Toibin unwarranted

Dear sir - Last week's 'heel snapping' article regarding Peadar Tobin TD highlights that the wealth gap in Ireland has grown immensely, as a small minority have made extraordinary amounts of money. One would think it was all down to Meath Fianna Fail's two old guard politicans, if one listened to him. Clearly if Peadar Tobin TD was serious on this issue, why has he not put down a motion in Dail Eieann for the urgent need to have a common universaal pension scheme for private and public pensions backed by the state, which could be capped by the Oireachtas to give all contributors (politicans included) a dignified retirement lifestyle. Mr Dempsey and Mr Brady are the old guard of Fianna Fail in Meath. Under the leadership of Michael Martin TD, a new Fianna fail of hard core talent has being created, whom have first hand experience of the lasting consequenses of the mortgage epidemic. These new people are not linked to bankers whom were totally indifferent to the economic survival of Ireland. For me, Michael Martin TD is the new Lemass and totally correct to put Crowley and O Cuiv and their presidential aspirations in their place. His vision of how the instruments of Oireachtas exercises its power is one of forward change. His willingness to listen to issues of non accountabilty and corruption of senior civil servants is mature debate worth listening to. Its perplexing that Peadar Tobin has no insight to makes heel snapping comments on the Fine Gael leader's lack of idelaogy- or being all things to all people, while concurrently destroying the educational and healthcare systems to the detriment of ordinary Meath people. Giving political power to Peadar Tobin is turning out to be like giving razor blades to a baby for the people of Meath! It is clearly populist for Peadar Tobin to make heel snapping comments and shy away from defacto action. If you look at the few heavyweight politicans that have consistently delievered for their area, Noel Dempsey TD is certainly unique in his superhuman workrate, always delivering for Meath over a 30 year period. Thus, this great man is an exeception to the rule and is entitled to all he has and more to enjoy his retirement with his family. Yours, Gerard O'Brien, Navan.
