TV Highlights

ICA Bootcamp (RTE 1, Sunday 9.30pm) - Sixteen well-known personalities shed their 'glad rags', give up their champagne lifestyles and travel to the ICA training headquarters in An Grianán, Termonfeckin to take on the challenge of 'Charity ICA Bootcamp'. Only the toughest and bravest of all these recruits will survive to claim the grand title of Charity ICA Bootcamp Recruit of the Year 2011 with over €100,000 raised for charity in the process. The recruits are male and female, young and not so young with varying levels of domestic ineptitude and include Paul Gogarty (former Green Party TD), Peter Clohessy (former Munster and Ireland prop forward), Dr Eva Orsmond (Operation Transformation), Emma Quinlan (snake charmer), Dickie Rock (legendary entertainer), Kamal Ibrahim (Mr World), Emma Waldron (Ms Ireland), Siobhan O Connor (broadcaster), Jessica Kuerten (showjumper), Keavy Lynch (pop star - Barbarella), Frankie Gavin (De Danann), Derek Burke (Crystal Swing), Mary McEvoy (actress), Dave Young (entertainer), Stephen Carter (The Carter Twins), Leanne Moore (singer). Presented by Blaithnaid Ní Chófaigh the final week of ICA Bootcamp will unfold over three live episodes - 16th, 17th, 18th August. ___________________________________________________________ Town (BBC 2, Thursday 9pm) - By 2030, 92 per cent of us will be living the urban life. Congested cities may sprawl across world maps, but they are not the only way to live. This series celebrates the forgotten world of the town, smaller than a city, more intimate, more surprising. As the gateway to the Scottish highlands, Perth is a town packed with history - has survived a regicide within its walls and rebuilt itself after devastating floods. It is also a town that wants to be a city, and geographer and adventurer Nicholas Crane is on a journey to find out why, what benefits that brings, and what the town has to do to achieve its ambition. ____________________________________________________________ Cracker (ITV3, Monday 11.05pm) - Robbie Coltrane fills the small screen in this drama series about an unconventional forensic psychologist. A Catholic father-of-four is arrested after a prostitute is found murdered, but he denies the crime. Beck returns from sick leave to work alongside Penhaligon, who is privately convinced that Beck raped her but has no forensic evidence. While Fitz faces a family tragedy, a second prostitute is attacked while the chief suspect is still in custody. ____________________________________________________________ Surviving Hitler: A Love Story (BBC 4, Tuesday 9pm) - As a teenager in Nazi Germany, Jutta is shocked to discover she is Jewish. Eventually she joins the German resistance and meets Helmuth, an injured soldier - and soon after the two become sweethearts and soon co-conspirators in the final plot to assassinate Hitler. This would sound like a pitch for a Hollywood blockbuster were it not all true. 'Surviving Hitler: A Love Story' is in fact a harrowing tale of war, resistance, and survival. At the centre of the documentary is a love story for the ages, with riveting narration by Jutta herself, original 8mm footage (shot by Helmuth) and a happy ending. ____________________________________________________________ Movie of the week: One Flew OverThe Cuckoo's Nest (BBC 1, Thursday 11.25pm) - Jack Nicholson at his wonderful best as McMurphy, a social misfit who finds himself locked up in an insane asylum through his own choice to avoid a prison sentence. Whilst there he encourages his fellow inmates, Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd and Brad Dourif among them, into acts of rebellion, joyous freedom and self-expression. The authorities, principally in the shape of the formidable Nurse Ratchet, react with increasing violence to McMurphy's dangerous ideas with terrible final consequences.
