Moore remembers Yellow Furze
Singer Christy Moore, who will be Gay Byrne's guest on an upcoming 'For One Night Only' show on RTE, will speak about how much his late mother meant to him and how she inspired him to write 'Yellow Furze Woman' which he also will perform on the programme, presented by Gay Byrne. Moore's mother, Nancy Power, was a native of the Yellow Furze-Seneschalstown area outside Navan, where her father worked on Sir Alexander Maguire's Ardmulchan estate. Her mother was Elly Sheerin of the Cotton Mills, and Moore recalled that Nancy had an idyllic childhod in the area, where older people could remember her as an easy-going child with a great zest for living. She had a brother, Jim, who died in hard circumstances in Birmingham, Moore wrote in his autobiography. The young Nancy Power sang in church and school choirs, and was a renowned soloist, developing a fine soprano voice. She understood lyrics, melodies, voice and voice projection, and communication. Nancy married Andy Moore of Newbridge, Co Kildare, and her talents obviously rubbed off on some of her children - Christy and his brother Kevin - better known as Luka Bloom. In the show on Friday 29th July, Christy Moore tells his life story through his songs. He talks about his early influences from the Clancy Brothers to civil rights fundraiser Dominic Behan. Being a great social commentator, he also talks about the time he was moved to honour Veronica Guerin in song. On a more humerous note, he also talks about Garda Brenda Hyland, who won the Rose of Tralee, and how the thoughts of her took "his imagination to places that he shouldn't go" and inspired the hilarious song 'Me And The Rose'. Moore goes on to sing his favourite song of all time, 'Lord Baker', which he performs acappella. The old favourites 'Ordinary Man', 'Nancy Spain' and 'Lisdoonvarna' are also included in his set as well as the stories behind them. The programme finishes with Byrne and Moore reminiscing about the amount of times he appeared on the Late Late Show (an estimated 22 times in total) and the audience join in with the 'Cliffs of Dooneen'. 'For One Night Only' airs on RTE1 at 9.35pm on Friday 29th July.
