Foroughi and Treacy enjoy success at Tullamore
It was a case of a case of double delight for two Meath athletes on Sunday with Star of the Sea's Kourosh Foroughi winning the high jump at the National u-23 Championships at Tullamore and Moynalvey/Kilcloon's Sarah Treacy taking both the 800m and the 1500m events. Foroughi cleared 2.15 metres to take the title ahead of his long-standing rival Barry Pender (St Abban's). The Star of the Sea man was unable to make the 2.20 standard catching the bar with his leg on the third attempt. Treacy comfortably claimed the 800m and an hour later she ran in the 1500m and again produced a winning performance only this time it was much closer. The Meath athlete did enough to edge out her opponent and make it a memorable double. "Kourosh got his body over the bar, but just clipped it with part of his leg and knocked the bar off the uprights," said Meath Athletics Co Board chairman Brendan Meade. Last year Foroughi cleared 2.20 and his target is to reach 2.25. Foroughi has spent some time recently training in Germany. He also travelled to Izmir in Turkey as part of the Irish team for the European Team Championships. Also on the Irish team in Izmir was Michelle Carey who has connections in Trim and Derval O'Rourke who is trained by the Skryne-based combination of Sean and Terri Cahill. Foroughi's next big assignment will be the European u-23 Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic in mid-July. One of Ireland's top long-distance runners Andrew Ledwith (Fr Murphy) showed impressive form when he won the Kilcock 5km race on Friday. South O'Hanlon's Paul Gleeson won the o-40 category with David Carey second in the o-45 event. South O'Hanlon also took the team event. Bohermeen's Kelly Brady, a second year student at St Ciaran's Community School, Kells won the junior shot-putt at the All-Ireland Schools' Athletic Championships at Tullamore. Brady also won both the shot-putt and the hammer competitions in the Leinster Schools Championships and will represent Meath in the throwing and javelin at the Community Games. She also received the 'Sportsperson of the Year' at St Ciaran's this year. There was an outstanding performance by Dunboyne's Michael Hanlon at the Tailteann inter-provincial championships at Morton Stadium on Saturday. Hanlon, representing Leinster schools, won the discus with a throw of 39.52m. He also won the Leinster u-17 discus at Tullamore with a throw of 38.04m. Navan athletes Tara Gallagher and Sorcha Love performed very well at the All-Ireland Championships at Templemore at the weekend. Dunboyne athlete Phelim Glynn was the best Meath finisher in the annual Dunshaughlin 10km race which attracted a huge number of runners to the village last weekend. The race was won by David Rooney (Raheny Shamrocks), a member of the Irish u-23 cross-country team that achieved success in Portugal earlier this year, with Galway's Gerry Ryan (Craughwell) second and Vinny Mulvey (Raheny Shamrocks) in third place. Glynn finished 13th overall in a time of 33.38, two minutes faster than last year. He was followed home by Neville Reilly (15th) in a time of 33.57 which was an improvement of three minutes on last year's time. Glynn also secured second place in the o-45 category. The race was significant for Dunshaughlin's Shauna Moore who was included in the junior women's u-20 section. Following from her first international appearance, her time of 39 minutes 42 seconds was almost a minute quicker than the previous mark set in 1995 by Fiona McGann. Dunboyne's Fiona Reid (38.31) put her in sixth position while Emilia Dan continued her good run of form with a time of 40.58 for fourth place in the o-40 category. Aoife Kerrigan had a good run finishing in 47.57, a personal best over this distance. Other Dunboyne athletes to take part in the race were Alan McKernan (40.24), Mick Foy (41.13), David Galbraith (41.22). There were also good runs from Paul Gorey, Aidan Keegan, and Ray Mitchell. Eddie Reid finished in a time of 45.38 and was fifth in the o-60 category. Warren McIntyre who was making his debut in the Dunboyne singlet had a time of 47.56. The Fit4Life group was very well represented at the race with Siobhan Carey leading the way home in a time of 49.58 almost six minutes faster than last year. Sinead Thompson and Michelle Robson were next home for the club with fine runs. Deirdre Mangan and Angela Walsh kept each other company the whole way round the course and finished together in 55.26. Mangan's time was over four minutes faster than in last year's race. There were also good runs from Gwen Burke (her second race in two days) Helen Beswick and Vivienne Lennon. South O'Hanlon's Patsy Fitzsimons was second home in the o-60 category in the Dunshaughlin race. "Almost 650 finished the race, the highest number to cross the line in the 32-year history of the event. Humidity was a big factor on the night and a high number of finishers commented that the heat had been tough to deal with," stated Dunshaughlin clubman Pearse Fahy. TRIATHLON Ian Richardson, from Higginstown, Slane finished fifth in the 20-24 Male Age Group Sprint event, with a time of 1:09:07 at the 2011 Pontevedra ETU Triathlon European Championships in Spain.
