New type of politics needed in Ireland

Dear sir - I am a proud Irishman, and democratic socialist, and even at the age of 18, I can tell what awaits me when I graduate from my college course. It is not a fair Ireland, nor a democratic Ireland. What this nation needs is a new political party. Indeed, it needs the destruction of both Fine Gael, and Fianna Fail at the next election. I am not a firm believer in Labour either, though I could work with them were I to become a politician for a new party one day. I feel that a new type of politic is required, a new democratic socialism. A country where trading derivatives are taxed, gambling against Irish debt is illegal, money goes into jobs and healthcare, not 'banks'. The party I would propose would tackle drugs by following what Holland did, and legalise drugs, and tax them whilst keeping prices low enough to stop gangsters profiting on consumers. Obviously, prostitution would follow, and the prostitutes could be forced to take STI tests every month, and must show all consumers their medical papers if requested to do so, in the brothel with a witness. Furthermore, full gay rights must be given to the gay community, and a partial re-unification process, with a view to a united Ireland and economy in principle must be examined. All TDs should get paid no more than sixty thousand euro a year. All semi state companies should be nationalised (including Aer Lingus, but save perhaps the ESB and Bord Gais). The banks must be nationalised, until invisible 'markets' are trading without operating a threat to Irish sovereignty. The rich should be taxed more as they can afford to be, social welfare payments should be frozen and not cut until there's nothing left. Never have I wanted to make a difference more. So, when I see emigrants being called selfish, I feel fuelled with anger at upper class snobs. I know there are a lot of people out there who feel the same, and they are not all unemployed students, with unemployed parents who are trapped here anyway. Economics, social policies and history inspire me when I need belief in improvement, not just a change of government. I want to live in a country where a taoiseach can only serve a maximum of two terms, and he/she must be elected. Where the poor are not always the victims, and where the state runs all schools, and with continuous assessment, and with universal healthcare, jobs and a full education a right. I want an Ireland with a welfare state exactly like Denmark's. I want the Ireland James Connolly wanted, and that the seven signatories, along with so many others died for. I believe that Fine Gael and Fianna Fail have dishonoured it throughout our history with, inhumanity, cowardice and rapine. Our second taoiseach, WT Cosgrave, even encouraged emigration. What has changed? Now is the time to set up a democratic socialist party which can do something. We have had over ninety years of the same three parties (and you, Sinn Fein) ruining our lives. Yours, Andrew Purfield, Castlegrove, Julianstown.
