Special garden competition to mark 50 years of local Tidy Towns group

Kells Tidy Towns Committee, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, has just launched its golden jubilee competition, which is open to houses, businesses and estates throughout the town. The Kells Tidy Towns Committee was formed in 1960 and is one of the oldest in Ireland. The committee is currently making huge efforts to make the town look attractive and members have been out undertaking litter control and other work in the town every Saturday and Sunday since last April. Chairman Seamus Grimes has thanked all the local businesses who painted their premises in recent weeks and has urged as many local residents, residents' associations and businesses to participate in the competition. There are categories for small and large gardens as well as front and rear gardens and amenity areas in residential estates and at commercial or community premises. There also will be categories for best window boxes, best pot plants and best hanging baskets, both commercial and residential. Prizes will be awarded to the best residential area, for the most unique garden and there is a novelty garden award. There are awards for best large small and new estates as there is an off-street category and a home of excellence award. To mark the 50th anniversary, there will also be special golden jubilee awards, both for individuals and groups. All entries must be accompanied by a name and phone number and entry forms are available from Seamus Grimes, Avril Gillick, Jason Govern or Brian Curran. The entry forms must be returned by this Sunday, 25th July, and judging will start during the first week in August.
