'Workmen' attempt to steal from Navan home of elderly woman

Gardai are warning people to be vigilant about who they let into their homes after another deception crime occurred in Navan last week when two males, masquerading as workmen, entered the home of an elderly lady. Between 5.30pm and 6pm on Tuesday of last week, the elderly lady opened the door of her Connolly Avenue home to find two men who said they wanted to check for water leaks. One of the men distracted the lady while the other entered her bedroom. Nothing was taken and the men abruptly left the scene. Both men are described as 5' 10" in height and of slim build. One had short red hair and the other had short dark brown hair and was missing a top front tooth. An hour later, two men entered the home of an elderly lady in Drogheda, also claiming to be checking for water leaks. Anyone with information is asked to contact Navan Garda Station. Meanwhile, Gardai have said that any legitimate callers to homes will have ID and that homeowners should ask for identification to verify the caller's identity. Navan Gardai, meanwhile, are investigating the theft of a high-powered car from outside a house in Balreask Village in the early hours of Monday morning. The 99 D registered silver Subaru Legacy was stolen from the driveway of the house at around 2.45am. A number of males were seen pushing the car out on to the road before it was started and driven away. The car had five-spoke alloy wheels and the brake fittings were sprayed red. A break-in to a car parked in the yard of St Mary's Church in Navan over the weekend is also being investigated. The Skoda Octavia was parked in the churchyard at 5pm on Friday 2nd July and, when the owner returned at 10.30pm, on Sunday evening, they found that the driver's window had been smashed and items taken included a camera, binoculars and a driving licence. A car was also broken into at the Hill of Slane on Wednesday, 30th June, between 6.15pm and 6.30pm. The owners had been touring the area and a handbag, wallet, Northern Ireland driving licence, Icon camera, American passport, American driving licence and $1,000 were taken from the silver Ford Mondeo. A criminal damage incident where an upstairs bedroom window and patio door of a house at Oakleigh, Balreask Old, Navan, were smashed when rocks were thrown, is being investigated. The incident occurred at 7.15am on Tuesday morning. Gardai are following a definite line of enquiry. The front door of a shop at Railway Street, Navan, was smashed between 8pm on Thursday 1st July and 8am on Friday 2nd July. The theft of a trailer with a ride-on lawnmower on it from outside a house at Tower View, Trim, between 4pm and 6pm on Saturday evening, 3rd July, is being investigated by Trim Gardai.
