New Garda Supt takes up role in Trim

A new Garda superintendent has been appointed to the Trim District, following the retirement of Superintendent John Dunleavy last September. Superintendent Mary Gormley took up her role in charge of the Trim Garda District last Thursday. Her previous role was in the Garda College at Templemore, Co Tipperary, where she was in charge of continuous professional development. A native of Boyle, Co Roscommon, Supt Gormley has been posted mostly in the city centre during her 31-year career in An Garda Siochana - at Store Street, Whitehall, the Bridewell and Santry. Before being promoted to the rank of superintendent at the Garda College in November 2008, Supt Gormley was an inspector in Store Street, Dublin, in community policing and community relations. Supt Gormley said she has a strong background and strong interest in community policing, as well as the investigation and detection of crime. She added that her priorities for Trim is to keep an "excellent and professional policing service in the Trim District and to build on what is already in place". She said shelooked forward to meeting various different local groups, including elected representatives, community groups and local services. During the 10-month period while a superintendent was not assigned to Trim, Inspector Sean Farrell ran the district. Supt Gormley said "he made life very easy for me taking over". the new Garda Supt said she is looking forward to her new role in Trim and "intends to hit the ground running". She added: "This is my first foray into the country and I am delighted to be here."
