Patrick Bell Memorial to take centre stage

Bohermeen Athletic Club will be staging one of the biggest events in the history of the club when they stage the 25th Patrick Bell Memorial 5k run and walk on Saturday, 7.0. The race is run in memory of Patrick Bell, who was a member of Bohermeen AC and who tragically died in a traffic accident in 1985. The change of day from a Friday to a Saturday is an attempt by the organisers to ease the rush to the Meath village and the expectations are that last year's turnout of just under 500 runners and walkers will be surpassed this time around. The event is very much community-based with families and children lining up alongside possible Olympian athletes. Each participant who completes the course receives a memento of the occasion in memory of the late Patrick Bell. The course is around the old Greetiagh block in Bohermeen. After the run and walk there will be a barbecue and live music. A distinctive feature will be a series of open turf fires, a reminder that those taking part in the festivities are in the centre of the Royal County. Food and refreshments will also be on offer. Entry to the 5k is €15 for runners, €10 for walkers and €5 per child with family rate also available. Entry and number collection at Bohermeen community centre. No entry after 6.30. Proceeds from this year's event is for several upgrading projects at the Bohermeen AC track and also local societies. Over the years thousands of euros have been raised for worthy causes including the Meath Arch Club, Meals-on-Wheels, Crumlin Childrens' Hospital and Whistlemount Alzheimers Day Care Centre.
