Moynalty welcomes news of new school

Moynalty parish priest, Fr Joe McEvoy, has welcomed the news that the village is to receive a new primary school, describing it as the fruit of the hard work over many years and over many boards of management. The current Scoil Mhuire is comprised of 50 per cent prefabs and 50 per cent made up of old, small classrooms, he said. The parish has donated a site for this school which was a major factor in moving so quickly on the issue, by being able to provide a free greenfield site. The local community have been hugely supportive of this venture and all rose to the task of fundraising to achieve the local contribution for the new build. Past pupils from all over the world, local businesses, all past pupils and all of the present school community and parish community have been truly amazing at their readiness to contribute to the cause, added the local PP. "It shows how vital the school is in a community and what high regard all people have for the importance of good education for our children," Fr McEvoy added. He extended thanks to all involved for their hard work and for their steadfastness and for their commitment, with special thanks going to the present board of management and the present parent body in the school. The people of Moynalty are to be congratulated on their efforts to bring a new primary school to their area, Senator Dominic Hannigan has said. "I know the community has worked hard to achieve this goal. Thanks to the generosity of local contributions, the school fundraising drive Moynalty undertook some years ago went well beyond its original target," added Senator Hannigan. The Labour senator said he was delighted that the Department of Education has given the go-ahead for a new four-classroom school for Scoil Mhuire. He welcomed the fact that the building, catering for up to 114 pupils, will include green energy features. "I am told the school will be a passive build, which will save considerable money on energy throughout its lifespan. All that remains is for planning permission to be granted and, hopefully, this will come through quickly," he said.
