Courier company goes lean to beat slump

Despite the continuing economic downturn, one Meath company is continuing on the road to financial success by focusing on what its managing director calls "lean transport initiatives". Operating from a purpose-built 30,000 square foot warehouse near Collon, Breffni Couriers has been in operation for 22 years and currently employs over 24 staff with a fleet of 19 trucks. It provides its clients with a high-quality, reliable, fast and flexible service which is individually tailored to meet their needs. The company is a member of TPN (The Pallet Network), one of Ireland's most successful transport industry businesses, supported by 23 regional members throughout the country. TPN had a turnover of more than €9 million in 2009 and has projected a turnover of over €10 million for 2010. Brian O'Reilly, managing director, said: "2009 was one of the toughest years for the transport industry in Ireland. Prices for moving cargo tumbled and volumes dropped with the reduced economic activity. Less consumer spending meant considerably less goods being transported. "We focused on becoming as lean as possible, cutting costs while maintaining services. Being part of TPN, a multi-million Euro network, enabled my company to grow because of the support and encouragement from the other 22 network members. This year, we are going to focus on staying lean and providing the best overnight service and the best customer service. These are the initiatives that helped us thrive in 2009. We are looking ahead to a successful 2010." TPN has been shortlisted as a finalist in the innovation and excellence category of the SFA 2010 Awards for the second year running. It has also been shortlisted in the new Irish Logistics and Transport Awards, for the best practice award and environmental award. Both award nominations add to the growing list of awards and recognition the firm has generated since its launch in 2004. TPN's chairman, Owen Cooke, was also nominated for the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2009.
