Chemical spill alert follows N52 truck crash

A lorry driver suffered serious injuries when his articulated tanker left the road and crashed into an embankment on the Kells-Ardee Road, near Woodtown, Drumconrath, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Units from Nobber, Kells and Navan Fire Service rushed to the scene on the N52 as the truck had been carrying a consignment of acid. However, the integrity of the tank remained intact and sealed and there was no leak of the hazardous chemicals. Nonetheless, firemen remained on the scene from around 4am to 2pm on Saturday to ensure there were no spills or leakages. The road was closed for a period following the collision which occurred shortly before 4am. The driver of the truck, who was from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, was taken to Our Lady's Hospital in Navan and was believed to have suffered serious, but not life-threatening, injuries in the crash which badly damaged the cab of the truck and demolished part of the ditch and several trees along the roadway.
