'Grow It Yourself' branch launched in Dunshaughlin

Grow it Yourself (GIY) Dunshaughlin was recently launched with a mission of encouraging people from all walks of life and of all ages to grow their own food in their home, allotment or community garden and to provide them with the practical skills they need to do so successfully. The meeting in Dunshaughlin Community Centre was addressed by Michael Kelly, who gave a very informative and thought-provoking slide presentation on the nature and background to much of the food we eat. Mr Kelly is the founder of GIY Ireland. He wrote a book called 'Trading Paces' which tells the story of a young couple who decided to forsake the corporate world and downshift to a more simple and sustainable lifestyle. He is also a contributor to The Irish Times, writing features on lifestyle issues, food, self-sufficiency, travel and health. His second book, 'Tales from the Home Farm', is a month-by-month guide to producing food in your back garden, published in September. The meeting was also attended by Terry Flanagan from RTE'S 'Mooney Show'. A steering committee for the Dunshaughlin group was set up, whose duties will be to formulate the structure of forthcoming meetings, arrange for interesting guest speakers and generally promote the GIY concept and encourage other budding gardeners to join. The second meeting of GIY Dunshaughlin will take place in the local community centre on Wednesday 26th November at 9pm.
