Gardai following 'definite line' in Heatons cash theft

Navan Gardai say they are following a 'definite line of inquiry' in relation to a burglary at Heatons Store in Navan Town Centre where a "substantial" amount of cash and cheques were stolen. The burglary occurred between 9.30pm on Friday night and 7am last Saturday morning when it was discovered, but Gardai are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the area of the store between 9.45pm and 11.15pm on Friday night. Superintendent Michael Devine of Navan Garda Station said a "significant" amount of cash and cheques had been stolen from the safe on the premises. Closed circuit television (CCTV) footage in the shopping centre is being examined by Gardai as part of their investigation and Supt Devine confirmed that Gardai are following a definite line of inquiry in relation to the burglary. It is understood that no damage was caused to the premises and Gardai are trying to establish how entry was gained as part of their inquiry. Anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the area is asked to contact Navan Garda Station on (046) 907 9930 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111. Meanwhile, Gardai are also investigating a burglary at Simonstown GAA Clubhouse between 1.30am and 8.15am on Monday morning. It is understood that access was gained through an emergency exit door at the front of the building. The alarm was broken in the bar area and some damage was caused to the office. However, nothing was taken. If anybody noticed anything suspicious in the Simonstown or Proudstown Road area of Navan at around 1.30am on Monday morning, they are asked to contact Navan Gardai Station. A break-in to a house at Cluain na Boinne, Johnstown, between 4.20am and 4.45am on Saturday morning is also being investigated by Gardai. The intruder was confronted by the house-owner and fled the scene. Supt Devine said such break-ins to homes are a sign of the current times and that the incidents of thefts from vehicles is also on the rise. He is urging people not to leave valuable items in sight in their cars. The window of a car parked at the Bridge on the Boyne at Ardmulchan was broken between 1.15pm and 1.50pm on Friday of last week. A handbag containing approximately €20 in cash was taken from the vehicle. Gardai in Trim are investigating a break-in to a house at The Moy, Summerhill, on 18th August between 4pm and 8.30pm. Entry was gained through a forced rear window. Nothing was taken but house was ransacked. Gardai are appealing for anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the area at the time to contact them. Meanwhile, the theft of a 1994-registered black Honda Civic from the yard of a house at Dangan, Summerhill, between 10pm on 18th August and 4.30am on 19th August is also being investigated.
