Bank holiday crash claims another young woman's life

The second young woman to die on the county's roads in a fortnight was killed in a tragic accident near Athboy in the early hours of bank holiday Monday. The death of 23-year-old Noreen McGoldrick was the third death on Meath's roads in just over two weeks and brings to eight the number of lives lost in the county so far in 2009. Gardaí in Kells are investigating Monday morning's accident which occurred at 3.15am on the M51 at Curleyland, Athboy. The driver and sole occupant of the silver Opel Corsa was fatally injured when she lost control of the car and it collided with a ditch. Ms McGoldrick's body was removed from the scene by ambulance to Our Lady's Hospital, Navan, where a post-mortem examination took place. Ms McGoldrick was originally from Dublin but had been living at Connaught Place, Athboy. She was well-known in Athboy and had worked in the Old Darnley Lodge Hotel in the town for a number of years, where she was a popular member of staff, but she had more recently been working in the Castle Arch Hotel in Trim. The area where the accident occurred, which is about a mile from Athboy, has been described by locals as a notorious stretch of road where there have been numerous accidents over the years. Diversions were in place for most of Monday morning as the road was closed for a Garda forensic examination of the scene. The deceased young woman's remains will be reposing at Mullen's Funeral Home, O'Growney Street, Athboy, from 2pm tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon and the removal will take place to St James's Church, Athboy, tomorrow evening, arriving at 7pm. The funeral Mass will take place on Friday at 11am, with burial in St James's Cemetery to follow. This latest death has brought to eight the number killed on Meath roads this year. Just two weeks ago, Meath roads claimed two young lives when a 23 year-old Kilcloon woman and a 32 year-old motorcyclist were killed in separate collisions in the county. Susan O'Reilly from Kilgraigue, Kilcloon, was involved in a single vehicle collision at Moynalvey, Summerhill, and passed away in hospital two days later, and a 32 year-old motorcycle racer, Padraig Campbell from Westmeath, died during following an accident during a practice lap at the Kells Road Races in Crossakiel.
