Trim residents take part in health programme

Some 22 people from the Trim area recently took part in the 'Just For The Health Of It" training programme for community groups in the Family Resource Centre in Mornington Heights, Trim. The aim of this programme, delivered by the HSE Health Promotion Department, is to enable people to gain confidence and skills to improve their own health and well-being and that of their community group. The participants, who came from a range of community groups including ALPS, heritage groups and local youth clubs learned about healthy diets, physical activity, sexual health, suicide awareness, men"s health and how to quit smoking. Some of the participants have gone on to complete the six-week 'Cook It" leaders" training programme" in the Family Resource Centre, organised by the by the HSE Health Promotion Department community dieticians. Trim Family Resource Centre is currently developing a walking club, a men"s drop-in club and an activity club for older people, continuing to endorse the centre as a health promotion setting. Courses are also provided at its two premises in the estate, including first aid, childcare, computer skills and parenting programmes. A series of information evenings and family activities over the summer are also organised. The centre operates an open door policy where visitors are always welcome. The local community is the backbone of the resource centre and volunteers are crucial to the success of the centre. Many local people volunteer their time and talents regularly, which is both welcomed and encouraged.
