Cllr welcomes local public lighting surviving cuts

The planned extension of public lighting on the Proudstown Road as far as Simonstown GFC has survived the cut following the Budget decisions to Meath County Council"s road works allocation. A revised road works programme was put to Meath County councillors at a special meeting last week in light of the slashing of €5 million from the council"s roads budget by the Government. The news that the planned extension of the public lighting to Simonstown will go ahead has been welcomed by Cllr Shane Cassells who said that with reductions in spending totally €5 million, there was a fear that some projects would be abandoned. However, Cllr Cassells said that the extension of the public light scheme had been included under the improvement grant section and said he was 'delighted that the lighting scheme was to go ahead'. 'I had fought hard to have these lights included in the programme of works. The Simonstown complex is a successful centre and people go there from all over the town. 'The case for the extended lighting had been made by the club many times over the years and with the opening of Le Cheile, the physiotherapy clinic and the Astro turf pitches, it is not just a GAA club but has a broader community standing,' he said. Cllr Cassells said the public lighting would make it much safer for young people to walk to the complex from the nearby estates during the winter months. He added that the club makes a huge contribution to the community of Navan, providing excellent facilities and is a wonderful outlet for the people of the town.
