Council"s failure to nominate Hill of Tara

Dear sir - I learn recently that Meath County Council has failed to nominate Ireland"s most ancient cultural site, Tara, as a possible UNESCO World Heritage Site. How does this happen? Tara is the ancient site of Ireland"s High Kings and closely associated with St Patrick bringing Christianity to Ireland. What are the arguments against nominating Tara? I find the Council"s decision strange and inexplicable. At least, the site should be nominated. It"s up to the UNESCO people to decide whether it is of world status. Is Tara not at least as important as the following nominated Irish sites? The Burren and Cliffs of Moher (Clare Co Council); Cork harbour (Cork Co Council); Tory Island (Donegal Co Council); St Brendan"s Cathedral and Aran Islands (Galway Co Council); Lough Gur (Limerick Co Council); Clonmacnoise (Longford Co Council); Ceide Fields and Mayo Bogs (Mayo Co Council); Rathcroghan Archaeological Complex (Roscommon Co Council); Glendalough Monastic Settlement (Wicklow Co Council). I would appreciate learning the Council"s reasons for omitting Tara from this list. Yours, John McMahon, Mayfield, Zion Road, Rathgar, Dublin 6.
